A local startup company, Health Horizon is on a mission to become the home of all health innovations across the globe. Their public online platform is being developed here in Canberra, and the platform has two aims. Firstly to showcase health innovations that are currently being developed nationally and internationally, connecting these projects with technical or financial support. Secondly to provide easy and open access for anyone to stay up-to-date and connected with the rapidly changing space of health inventions.

Currently on the Health Horizon platform there are over 1500 innovations curated from a larger dataset. With over 40 of these health innovations being developed here in Canberra.

“While there’s an expectation that our local Universities are researching and developing new solutions, we discovered a surprising number of independent start-up companies wanting to improve the world’s health. Many have trouble getting their work seen, and will benefit from the connection we are creating at Health Horizon.” said Marcus Dawe, CEO of Health Horizon.

A number of these innovations are motivated by personal experience. Tina McIntosh spent 13 years experiencing chronic pain, and took the initiative to research brain plasticity to develop Brain Changer; a card based tool that leads patients through a Graded Exposure program, which is an evidence-based approach to de-sensitizing the nervous system.

“I couldn’t imagine developing Brain Changer anywhere else but Canberra, the support here is amazing.” Said Tina, who is currently completing the Griffin Accelerator program.

Joel Anderson is the co-founder of SIHQ, an online platform that allows people to access mental health professionals from the comfort of their own home. “Over 30% of Australians who experience mental health difficulties are not able to travel to get help” stated Joel who is working with OzHelp to develop a platform for young men working in the construction industry.

Joel aims to use his experiences to inspire other entrepreneurs. “Often newcomers get disgruntled when their idea isn’t suddenly available in a month, these things take time, and by making our timeline through Health Horizon we hope to make everyone realise we didn’t just get here over night” said Joel.

“We know there are more health innovations out there, so we are building a community of like-minded individuals to help us find them through events and online discussion.” explained Mathew McGann, co-founder of Health Horizon “We’ve created a global platform where anyone in the world is empowered to follow and support the journeys of health advances that matter to them.”
